UFC 107: BJ Penn Destroyed Diego Sanchez

I think I like professional fighting if for no other reason than when a trash-talker gets his ass handed to him. Sanchez did a lot of talking and couldn’t back it up. I understand for some they need to boost their own self-confidence but how many times can they do it if they fail? If you have two losses how do you pump yourself after that? For others it is just a way to hype the fight and sell tickets. Either way I love it when the talker get his ass kicked.

BJ Penn shocked me when he fought Sean Sherk and just outboxed the hell out of him. It was just ridiculous. Even though he couldn’t finish Sanchez, though most thought it was over early in the first round, there was never any doubt who was in control of that fight. Though a black belt in Gracie Jiu -Jitsu, Penn outboxed Sanchez and for the first time in Sanchez’s career, Sanchez was knocked down.

Sanchez couldn’t adjust his fight plan. He kept his straight walking punches that often earned him an overhand left by Penn. By the end of the fight he had a double split lip and one of the ugliest gashes I have ever seen on someone’s head. He could stick his wallet in there.

On to Frank Mir. I love his honesty about other fighters and fights. I wish he would turn that around on himself. At the end of the Penn/Diego fight I was glad Penn didn’t knock him out in the first round. It would have been too easy for Diego or his camp to say there was a lucky punch and if it went the distance Penn would have gasses, etc. etc. There is no room for that.

In Mir’s fight nothing was proven except that he almost knocked Kongo out. Kongo got put to sleep with the stupidest of moves, the guillotine. God I hate that. Both Mir and Kongo were robbed in that fight. We have no idea who would have won that match in the long run.

Mir got lucky against Brock Lesnar and he should know it. He was getting mauled just like he did in the second match vs Lesnar. I think Mir is skilled but he hasn’t proven himself yet. He was destroyed in that second match. His comments before the rematch with Lesnar sounded like someone ready to lose.

107 was a great card and lived up to most of my expectations except for the Mir fight.
